On “Look at the Moon,” Matthew Dear’s new single as Audion, it would seem that Dear’s sexed-up techno alter-ego has rounded off his jagged edges. A closer listen, though, reveals that Audion’s edges have only sharpened with time-they’re just finer and more fiendish. “Look at the Moon” begins at a whisper and builds to a shout, gathering shards of syncopation that cling to its sticky, kicks ‘n claps beat like twigs and rocks on a rolling snowball. Halfway through the track’s eight-plus minutes, “Look at the Moon”’s stair-stepping main theme slices through the mix like a chunky laser, and the kid gloves come off.
